「頑張って」を英語で言うと?

日本語ではよく「頑張って」と言いますよね。別れ際に「じゃあ、また。〇〇頑張って」のように、あいさつ代わりに使うこともあります。

英語で「頑張って」と言いたいとき、何と言っていますか。

英語には、日本語の「頑張って」にそのまま対応する単語がありません。状況に応じて、色々な表現を使います。

「頑張って」が使われる状況を2つに分けて、主な表現を紹介します。

  1. テストや面接など、何かをする前に声をかける「頑張って」
  2. 困難な状況に負けないで「頑張って」

 

 

何かをする前の「頑張って」

All the best.

Simon: Today is my last day at this place. I’m going to start a new job next week.

Oliver: It was nice working with you. All the best!

サイモン:今日が、ここでの最後の日なんだ。来週から、新しい仕事を始めるんだ。

オリバー:一緒に仕事できてよかったよ。上手くいくことを祈ってるよ。

All the best は、I wish you all the best. の略です。丁寧に言いたいときは、I wish you all the best. と言います。

また、All the best for your new job. や I wish you all the best for your new job. のように、for ~を加えることもできます。

Good luck in your exam!

試験、上手くいくといいね!

おなじみの good luck ですね。「~が上手くいくといいね」の「~」の部分は Good luck in ~ または、good luck with ~と言います。

 

Jean: Good luck in the meeting with your boss!

Randy: Thank you. I need it.

ジーン:上司との面談、上手くいきますように!

ランディ:ありがとう。運を味方につけたいよ(幸運が必要なの)。

自信がないときは、I need it. と返答することもできます。

Good luck. をより丁寧に言いたいときは、I wish you good luck. と言います。

Luck は不可算名詞なので、a good luck とは言いません。

Fingers crossed.

成功を祈ってるよ。

Fingers crossed は、文字通り、指を交差させることです。人差し指と中指を交差させて、十字架の形を作ります。

Fingers crossed. と言いながら、指を交差して見せることもありますし、ジェスチャーはともなわずに、言葉だけのときもあります。

丁寧に言うなら I’ll keep my fingers crossed. と言います。

 

You can do it!

Daisy: I don’t feel confident about this interview.

Roger: You can do it!

デイジー:この面接、あまり自信がないの。

ロナルド:大丈夫だよ!

I’m sure you can do it! とも言います。

The good work を維持してね、という意味ですね。The good work it に置きかえて、Keep it up. とも言います。

 

 

困難な状況に負けないで「頑張って」

難しい状況に直面して落ち込んでいるときや、あきらめようかな、といったときに、かける言葉です。

 

Cheer up!

Cheer up! Tomorrow is another day.

元気出して!明日は別の日だよ(今日と違って、明日はいいことあるよ)。

Cheer は「応援する」「元気づける」という意味です。Cheerleader(チアリーダー)の cheer ですね。

 

I’m on your side.

Noel: Nobody ever takes my side in an argument.

Emily: I’m always on your side.

エミリー:私はいつも、あなたの味方よ。

 

Hang in there.

「持ちこたえて、踏ん張って、ねばって」というニュアンスです。

Keep your chin up!

Jerry: Keep your chin up! It’ll get better soon.

アリシア:最近、やること全部が裏目にでるの。

ジェリー:元気出して!すぐによくなるよ。

Keep your chin up. は直訳すると、「あごを上に向け続ける」です。落ち込むと下を向きがちなので、「元気を出して上を向いて」ですね。
